Women's participation in the formal labor market has varied greatly over time and across space.  What is the role of culture in generating this variation?   Until recently, economics considered culture to be a "black box" -- hence not a proper topic for scientific inquiry.  This changed recently and there is now a thriving literature in this area.   The lecture will focus on the recent research on the role of culture in economic outcomes, especially in illuminating differences in women's labor force participation.
