The purpose of the committee
Research on climate and biodiversity is a topic witch creates substantial differences of opinion: one of the key questions has been how to deal with uncertain knowledge with regard to political decision-making and communication. The committee's overall goal is therefore to improve communication between the various disciplines and between science and the public.

Mandate
The mandate of The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters’ Committee on climate, environment and resources is to facilitate the dissemination of climate and ecosystem issues in the media and arrange scientific seminars on specific topics within this field .The committee's activity is in part based on the work of IPCC and IPBES and focus on the following: 
1. Knowledge about and causes of global warming/cooling.
2. The effects of global warming.
3. The effects of biodiversity loss.
4. The interplay between global warming and the loss of biodiversity both locally and globally.
5. Political, economic and social measures to reduce global warming, loss of biodiversity and other harmful consequences of climate change.
The purpose is to connect leading Norwegian researchers from both the natural and the social sciences who work with issues related to climate and biodiversity. The purpose is to give everyone a better understanding of the current state-of–the-art and the main discords and uncertainties. This will better enable researchers to act more clear and consistent when publicly debating these issues.   
Furthermore, the committee works to raise methodological, ethical and political issues for discussion. The aim is to identify topics that can motivate and initiate novel Norwegian research in climate and biodiversity.
The committee was established in 2009. It currently has 12 members who are all professionals within relevant disciplines.
The background for the establishment of the committee was a desire from the members of the Academy to address the research ethics, methodological and research policy issues related to climate and biological diversity research in a more systematic way. 
The committee also arranges public meetings and seminars where current issues on climate and biodiversity are comprehensively covered in an accessible and professionally sound manner for a wider audience.

The Academy's committee on climate, environment and resources publishes Statements on issues related to climate and biodiversity. These will first and foremost convey knowledge that can form the basis for formulating knowledge-based policy. The Statements are informative rather than argumentative.
